8 Recommended Local Dishes in Solo Indonesia

Solo or more popularly called Surakarta, is a city rich in culture and history, just like Yogyakarta. But you need to know that Solo is located in the province of Central Java. It is bordered by Karanganyar and Boyolali Regencies from the northwest, Karanganyar with Sukoharjo Regency from the east, and Sukoharjo Regency from the southwest.

If you grab some lunch in a restaurant in Solo, try out its Nasi Liwet. This is a very famous food for your carbo consumption that you must try. Nasi Liwet is coconut milk flavored-rice that is commonly served on top of banana leaves along with side dishes such as traditional fried-chicken, tempeh, boiled eggs, some veggies and spicy chili . The vendors or stalls that are selling this are usually open only from morning till the afternoon, however there are some that are still available until late at night.

  • Timlo Solo

Want to try out the Solo version of Indonesian dishes like Soto? Then try out Timlo Solo. Timlo Solo is a kind of soto (soupy dish) with inclusive boiled eggs, chicken liver, chicken stock, chicken gizzard, and Solo sausage (grilled egg with beef filling). Timlo is usually served for lunch or breakfast. The best place to get it is in Timlo Sastro.

  • Selat Solo

Selat Solo is the sole food out of Solo influenced by Western cuisine. It contrasts the Dutch cuisine style from the colonial era which then unifies with Javanese taste and style. Selat Solo consists of boiled egg and veggies, beef tenderloin, fried potatoes, and brown sauce.

  • Tengkleng

Tengkleng Solo is a Solo soupy dish made from goat bones. The food has very little meat in it, requiring you to have to suck it until it sticks to your tongue. Its broth is very tasty though.

Sate buntel is a satay made from tempeh or mutton, which is then grilled after being seasoned. Usually available in small stalls across the street. It is served on a banana leaf. Give this one a try if you want to taste a different kind of food.

Want to try unusual pancakes? You can try out Serabi Solo. It is made of coconut milk and rice flour. Cooked over a charcoal fire, Serabi Solo can give you aroma and taste that is distinct from another pancake. It is commonly filled with lots of variants such as banana, pineapple, jackfruit, peanut butter, and chocolate toppings.

  • Dawet Ice

Try out Dawet Ice if you are looking for something refreshing to quench your thirst. It is a jelly made from rice flour made from almond milk and Palm sugar to make it sweeter. You can easily find it sold in every corner of Solo city.

  • Nasi Langgi

This dish could be the Solo version of Nasi Lemak that is popular in Malaysia and Singapore. What makes them different is that the rice is cooked with coconut milk and other seasonings. What makes it special is the ‘Sambal goreng tempe’ (tempe sauteed in sweet soy sauce), omelette, opor ayam (chicken cooked with coconut oil) that being the  inclusives or complements along with Nasi Langgi.
